Howdy. Aloha. I’m Ty. I am a Designer and Art Director raised in many places called home over the years; Hawaii is the most reminisced while Texas was the dearest. I received my BA in Computer Graphic Arts from the University of the Incarnate Word and shortly after moved to Atlanta, GA to study Graphic Design at The Creative Circus where I graduated in late 2011. While attempting to enrich the world with inspiring art, awesome and beautiful things, I’ve had the chance to work on some amazing projects with clients such as Hulu, Mercedes-AMG, Hurley’s Salvation, Mercedes-Benz, Coca-Cola, Verizon Wireless, Cigarette Racing Team, Burn Energy Drinks, and Candoni Wines.
I love graphic design, and never take for granted the opportunity to use my talents in a way that can be beneficial to others. I draw my inspiration from the wild, a wide-range of sports, Batman, martial arts, personal projects, Star Wars, anything James Victore says, ancient warrior cultures, J. R. R. Tolkien, Wes Anderson films, podcasts like the JRE, Design Matters and The Fighter & The Kid, my son Tavi, and my other and most often better half, Regan. I am a design samurai with the desire to turn my inspirations and passions into purpose and meaning.
NEVER GROW UP.
I can vividly remember spending hours, sometimes days as a child playing with action figures. No matter the environment or atmosphere, I often sought to create new worlds in which my characters could interact. Seems like there was always a real freedom to create new logical and illogical stories full of adventure, exploration, danger, treasures, occasional damsels and rescue missions. Consequently by being so immersed in play I entered a space where time became irrelevant through the power of perpetual motion and supplemental creativity. By virtue of unfiltered joy and enthusiasm I was experiencing real timelessness. I later found that same connection through art and design. Hours can pass with serene ease while sketching thumbnails, assembling color harmonies, browsing imagery, playing with anchor points and line weights, and adjusting type or shifting pixels across the screen.
The challenge as an adult now lies in the ability to connect with that same child-like mindset of play or flow and use it to create better work and discover new styles. Design, more often than not grants me the freedom to explore, play, adapt, move, and create beautiful visuals everyday; regardless of the medium, restrictions, or style. With such freedom I’ve always felt the responsibility to bring as much of myself as I can to every project while also taking the time to dive deep, explore further, research more, and seek out solutions when they lie beyond my savvy. As a graphic designer, I thankfully still get the chance to play, invent, build connections, shake things up, create new experiences whether digital or tactile, make people feel things, share stories, and create new worlds everyday. The only thing that’s changed is the tools and toys.
